Sizzling Web Site Design is aimed at those who appreciate the
technique
of Web site creation as opposed to updated study. Molly E.
Holzschlag
takes the reader through 100 Web sites, to explore what made them
sizzle
or fizzle. Many if not all the analyzed sites have evolved since
publication of this book. Therefore, those who seek information from
the
past will be perfectly at home with this book.
January 2, 1999
Holzschlag declares in chapter one that what makes a Web
site
sizzle is the designer's ability to combine art and technology.
With
that in mind, the design should be original, and have a strong
graphic
presence.
Chapters include:
Movies, Music and Entertainment
Newspapers and Magazines
Arts, Culture and the Humanities
Beauty, Fashion Health and Lifestyle
Computers, Internet and the Web
Travel and Adventure
Food and Beverages on the Web
People on the Net - Unique Home Pages
Games, Items of interest with Children in Mind
Company Presence on the Web
Each chapter contains ten evaluated sites in the aforementioned
categories. The first two sites are featured sites, which emphasize
design and content symmetry, and the other eight sites focus on other
issues of Web site design.
Appendices (A-E) provide readers with:
Site Reference
Top Twenty Design Tips
Color Table
Resource Reference and
What's on the CD-ROM
I
especially appreciate the color table appendix because it has the
HTML
color codes with their actual colors.
Generally, this book is great on the eyes because it offers lots of
color, from the rendered Web site themselves, to the design layout.
For
those without access to the internet and for referral to the
analayzed
sites, the CD-ROM will be of great help.
As the book is a bit old, upon surfing to the
highlighted sites one notices substantial changes. This
book
should be used as a history lesson of how Web sites were designed.
Browsers, HTML, and technology, in general, keep Web sites evolving.
