Finding a good text-based HTML editor is difficult - finding a good
text editor that recognizes HTML and offers good performance as a text editor is even harder. UltraEdit, from IDM Computer Solutions,
fills both of those functions extremely well, offering many
features found in full-featured word processors and programming
environments without the resource requirements or cost of those
programs.

One of UltraEdit's most valuable features is its configurable syntax
highlighting, preconfigured with C/C++, VB, HTML, Java and Perl. For
those needing more flexibility in syntax highlighting, IDM offers
over 50 wordfiles for various languages. UltraEdit's search functions
provide for regular expression searches and "find matching braces."
Hexadecimal editing mode allows for editing of binary files, complete
with HEX find, replace, and replace all. The ASCII table with
double-click insertion of ASCII characters is just one of several
nice features designed to simplify a user's work. Another nice "extra" is
database handling, including "insert string at every increment,"
column/block editing, insert/full columns, insert line numbers, and
sum columns/selection.
Both programmers and Web designers will appreciate UltraEdit's
project/workspace management. Keeping files together and deleting or
adding files to a project simplifies project management, freeing time
for other important tasks. UltraEdit provides project/workspace
support, including a "recent projects" list for up to 8 workspaces.
Web designers will like UltraEdit's tag list, and its "display file
in default browser" command simplifies the preview/testing process.
Also, UE's support for multiple open files makes large projects a simpler matter, and "find in files" and "replace in files" allow quick
changes in URLs and other repetitive elements.
Conventional text editing is also easier and more convenient in
UltraEdit - multilevel undo and redo, cut/copy/paste, drag and drop
editing, a 100,000-word spell checker (with dictionaries available in
9 languages), word wrap support, and auto-indentation are only a few
of the enhanced editing features available in UltraEdit.
There are many more useful and valuable features in UltraEdit 5.20,
including macro features, advanced and user-configurable features,
and many formatting, display and printing features make this one of the best text editors available.
For all its useful features, UltraEdit has an incredibly small
footprint. The executable file weighs in at just over 920 KB, and
UE's disk-based text editing supports up to 2 GB file sizes, with
minimal RAM requirements. This shareware product is also a great
bargain, with a 45-day trial period and a price of only $30.
UltraEdit is a great tool for anyone doing HTML coding, scripting, text or binary file editing.
